Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Earthrise

  • the home of Dennis and Peggy Voth in NW Calgary

On Christmas Eve of 1968, humanity saw Earth from space for the first time. The sight stunned the astronauts aboard Apollo 8, and captivated the rest of us when it appeared on our TV screens and magazine covers. It reminded us that our planet is our home.

In North America, the image marked a societal transition. Attention pivoted from conquering space to understanding what we have beneath our feet. A fledgling environmental movement already underway received a boost from the public recognition of the mystery and fragility of our planet suspended alone in black space.

In honour of Earthrise, you are invited to an evening commemorating its occurrence half a century ago. Join us for refreshments and local music in a homey atmosphere where you can socialize and reflect on a collective symbol that still moves us today. A short presentation will offer an encouraging look at its influence over the years.

Held at the home of Dennis and Peggy Voth in NW Calgary.
