Freud developed his system of psychoanalysis while studying the so-called borderline cases of mental illnesses such as hysteria and compulsion neurosis.By applying himself to a study of the patient's life he discovered that the hitherto puzzling symptoms had a definite meaning and that there was nothing arbitrary in any morbid manifestation. It was while tracing back the abnormal to the normal state that Freud found how faint the line of demarcation was between the normal and neurotic person and that the psychopathological mechanisms so glaringly observed in psychoneuroses and psychoses could usually be demonstrated in a lesser degree in normal persons. This led to a study of the faulty actions of everyday life and led to the publication of this fascinating book.

Manifestations of the Unconscious in Life Lecture:

C.G. Jung dedicated his entire professional career towards trying to understand the psyche. Jung describes the psyche as consisting of consciousness plus the unconscious. However, as Marie-Louise von Franz suggests in her biography 'C.G. Jung - His Myth in Our Time" , there seems to be a stumbling block of sorts for many people, both layman and professional specialist alike, for 'getting' the reality of the unconscious psyche and the role it plays in individual and collective life. Most people generally understand Jung's description of the personal unconscious with its feeling toned complexes. Yet, when Jung extends his description of the unconscious psyche by posting a collective unconscious, only the minority of people really 'get' what he proposes. This lecture, utilizing Jung's understanding of the unconscious will focus on describing multiple areas of life where the unconscious manifests such as conversation, dreams, projections, psychopathology, somatic symptoms, tattoos, comic books, graffiti writing, near death experiences, synchronicity and others.

    Dream Seminar:

This dream seminar will focus on Jung's approach to understanding dream material. Key elements and concepts to be discussed include the structure of dreams, the symbolic language of dreams, amplification, the complimentary and compensatory aspect of dreams, the personal and collective unconscious, ego, shadow, anima/animus, the Self and the transcendent function. The preceding key elements and concepts will be illustrated by dream material provided by the seminar leader for discussion and interpretation.
